Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about organ donation rules, eligibility, and procedures in India.

Any individual aged 18 and above can voluntarily pledge to donate organs after death regardless of religion or gender. Pre-existing conditions like hypertension or diabetes do not automatically disqualify you — doctors evaluate suitability at the time of donation.

In brain-stem death situations, vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and small bowel can be retrieved. In natural cardiac death, valuable tissues such as the eyes (corneas), skin, and heart valves can be donated within a few hours.

Under Indian law (Transplantation of Human Organs Act), the next of kin or immediate family must give final written consent at the time of organ retrieval. If your family is aware of your registered pledge, they can honor your wishes without hesitation.

No. Organ retrieval is performed with utmost surgical dignity and respect by certified surgeons in an operating theatre. Incisions are neatly closed and the body is handed over to the family without disfigurement or unnecessary delay.
